Exciting days lie ahead as the DAAD In-Country/In-Region network comes together in Nairobi! 🇰🇪 From 4–6 November 2026, representatives from 32 partner universities across Sub-Saharan Africa will meet for the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Network Conference. The three-day gathering will bring together participants to share experiences, strengthen university partnerships, and explore ways to advance postgraduate education and academic cooperation across the region. The momentum continues with the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Alumnae Meeting (9–10 November), bringing together female alumni under the theme “From Campus to Career: Empowering Women in Sub-Saharan Africa.” The meeting will celebrate the achievements of DAAD scholars and explore leadership, career development and women's empowerment. We join our colleagues at the German Embassy Kigali, Rwanda in congratulating two German scientists, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, who were, earlier this month, awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside American scientist Karl Deisseroth. Peter Hegemann (formerly of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry) and Georg Nagel (formerly of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics), together with Carl Deisseroth (Stanford University), are considered the founders of optogenetics. This research discipline uses light to study neural networks in the brain non-invasively. Light-sensitive ion channels, known as channelrhodopsins, act as switches that can control the flow of information within nerve cells.
