Celebrating Excellence: Congratulations to the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Scholars

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) extends its congratulations to the recipients of the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarships. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and outstanding potential, the scholarships enable talented students from around the world to pursue high-quality joint master’s programmes offered by leading European universities.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme is one of the European Union’s flagship initiatives for higher education cooperation and academic mobility. By bringing together students, universities, and researchers from across the globe, the programme promotes academic excellence, intercultural understanding, and long-term international partnerships.

Germany’s Role in the Erasmus Mundus Programme

Germany continues to play an important role in the Erasmus Mundus programme through the participation of its universities in numerous joint master’s programmes. These institutions offer internationally recognised teaching and research environments and contribute significantly to the programme’s academic quality and interdisciplinary character.

International students are an integral part of Germany’s higher education landscape. They enrich universities through diverse perspectives, contribute to research and innovation, and strengthen international academic networks that are essential for addressing global challenges. In addition to academic opportunities, students benefit from Germany’s rich cultural heritage, vibrant cities, and dynamic research and innovation ecosystem.

Celebrating Kenya’s Participation

This past week, DAAD joined the Delegation of the European Union to Kenya, the Embassies of Germany and Belgium, and the Government of Kenya in celebrating the departure of 33 Kenyan recipients of fully funded Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarships. The send-off ceremony recognised the scholars’ outstanding academic achievements while underscoring the transformative role of international education in preparing the next generation of researchers, innovators, professionals, and leaders.

The event brought together key representatives from Kenya and Europe, including the German Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Sebastian Groth; the European Union Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Henriette Geiger; Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala; and the Principal Secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak.

Among the 33 scholarship recipients, five will undertake part of their Erasmus Mundus studies at German universities. Ambassador Groth congratulated the scholars and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening academic cooperation and people-to-people ties between Germany and Kenya through higher education and research.

The Lasting Value of International Academic Exchange

International academic exchange creates lasting benefits for individuals, institutions, and societies. Beyond acquiring advanced academic knowledge, Erasmus Mundus participants develop intercultural competencies, build international professional networks, and gain experiences that strengthen international cooperation and contribute to sustainable development.

DAAD remains committed to promoting these opportunities through scholarships, institutional partnerships, and research collaboration, while supporting talented students and researchers in building bridges across countries and disciplines.

Looking Ahead

The next application cycle for Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarships is expected to begin from late September 2026. Prospective applicants are encouraged to explore the wide range of participating programmes and begin preparing their applications well in advance.

As Germany continues to strengthen its role in international higher education, DAAD looks forward to supporting future generations of scholars through academic exchange, research cooperation, and partnerships that contribute to addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development.
