A Global Journey Awaits: DAAD welcomes new students heading to Germany

Happening every year, this was a pre-departure orientation meeting aimed at providing the academics with cultural insights and pragmatic guidance in a friendly and engaging environment as they start this fascinating stage of their academic careers.
This afternoon’s meeting addressed a wide range of crucial topics like how to apply for a student visa, how to get around Germany, what to expect at the university and Germany in general, and how to adjust to a new culture. An alumnus of the Leadership for Africa Scholarship Programme, Mr. Benard Adera, now in Kenya, works as a junior Economist at the Parliamentary Budget Office of Kenya. He pursued a Master’s degree in Economics at the university of Kiel and discussed his experience studying in Germany—a poignant and educational component of the occasion. From the challenges of academics to the challenges of adjusting to university life, his honest opinions offered motivation as well as a realistic picture of life as an overseas student.

Attendees learned more about German culture, overcoming language barriers, and how to fit into a new way of life by means of an interesting question and answer session as well. The director and three program officers in charge of the three programs were excited to finally meet the scholarship recipients in person and commended them for getting the awards.
As the group is ready to travel to different German cities, we extend our best congratulations to them!
In preparation for the next Master’s and PhD scholarship intake, the DAAD will be hosting an Open Day event on Saturday, 21st June 2025, at the Goethe-Institut Auditorium, from 10 am to 4 pm.
Unfortunately, this year marks the final opportunity for the Leadership for Africa Scholarship program, which is aimed at nationals and refugees from Uganda and South Sudan. The deadline for application is 10th June 2025.
