The DAAD invited the first cohort of the “Leadership for Africa” Master Scholarship Program to a kick-off conference in Berlin on June 22 and 23, 2022. Students from East, West and Central Africa will be supported to study in Germany with funds from the German Federal Foreign Office; refugees are a particular target and focus group.

At the opening ceremony, DAAD Secretary General Dr. Kai Sicks welcomed the 40 scholarship holders and the numerous guests, including members of the German Bundestag, representatives of the Federal Foreign Office, members of the Commission, and members of the press.

The recipients of the scholarships have lived in Germany since October 2021, are enrolled in various universities and academic programmes, and have improved their German throughout the first year of support. Many of them can go to Germany as international students thanks to the scholarship, which gives them the chance to continue their education and launch a profession after graduation.

There have been three advertisements for the Leadership for Africa program so far (2020, 2021 and 2022). For studies to start in 2023, the third cohort is currently being chosen.

The DAAD Nairobi handles the selections, educates potential applicants about the scholarship program, and accompanies the scholarship recipients up until they go to Germany.
