After the devastating attack by terrorist militia al Shabaab on the Kenyan University of Garissa in 2015, the DAAD e.V. helped students to find their way back to normal with a support program. Several hundred particularly needy students received scholarships and were able to successfully complete their first academic degree with DAAD scholarships.

In the spirit of civil society engagement, the DAAD-Stiftung (DAAD foundation) in 2021 awarded a follow-up grant for Master studies to seven of these students in order to make it easier for these young academics to continue their studies sur place: The Garissa Master Scholarship Kenya.

The DAAD-Stiftung pursues similar purposes as its trustee, the DAAD e.V., but is characterized by the fact that the available funds are provided by private donors. These donations can be used by the DAAD-Stiftung for individual scholarship. The DAAD-Stiftung and the DAAD e.V. work closely together to implement this funding.

The Nairobi office was commissioned by the DAAD-Stiftung at the beginning of 2021 to announce the call for applications for the follow-up scholarship among the “Garissa” alumni. An overwhelming number of 170 alumni submitted their applications via the DAAD portal; in a competitive selection process with interviews, seven scholarships were awarded, three to females.

On behalf of the DAAD-Stiftung three colleagues of the DAAD Nairobi met the scholarship holders online a few months after they began their studies and report on their experiences:

Rachel Muendo from Machakos is pursuing a Master’s in environmental planning and management at Kenyatta University.

She applied for the DAAD-Stiftung Master Scholarship to better her career and improve her profession. In her words ‘The scholarship has a great positive impact in my life. Through it I am in a position to handle environmental matters in a more scientific and practical manner. I will not fail to mention that it has improved my financial background as well as enabled me to gain more exposure.’

Mark Mukhebi, from Western Kenya, is pursuing his Master’s in Education, Curriculum Instruction at Kibabii University, Bungoma.

Mark would like to become a professor in Education. In his words: “When I look at my background, I realize that without DAAD-Stiftung scholarship I would never have furthered my education. I want to report that I am comfortable, the scholarship has raised my living standard. I am just enjoying my studies and I am promising you good results. To other students out there, when God’s time comes, miracles will always happen. Always be prayerful.  I am happy I applied to DAAD-Stiftung., (whose trustee, the DAAD, is one of transparent independent organizations that is determined to help younger researchers all over the world.”

Carolyn Wanjuki is studying at her hometown, Embu, pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Conservation Biology at the University of Embu

Carolyn’s motivation to apply for a DAAD-Stiftung scholarship came about after she got interested in advancing her education after realizing that people have abandoned the conservation sector, which has led to an increase in food insecurity and poverty. She is interested in the improvement of biodiversity. In her words: “After getting the DAAD-StiftungScholarship I quit my job. The scholarship has helped me to fully concentrate on my work and to put more effort into my studies.

Ismail Sambul from Mandera  is pursuing his Masters Degree in Business Administration; Strategic Management at Moi University, Coast Campus.

His career objective has been to become a corporate strategy team leader in few years to come. Ismail narrates how the scholarship has made him have a more positive life approach and has improved his mental health by positively affecting his focus in life. In his message to other students, he says that students, especially those from humble backgrounds, should keep focused and aim for the highest. Learners with disabilities should never give up and should strive for academic excellence.

Amriya Issa Yahya from Mombasa is pursuing her Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Nairobi, focusing on the thematic area of Strategic Management.

Amriya is passionately determined to actualize her academic and career prospects of becoming a competent Corporate Strategist in an impactful manner. In her words:  “The Garissa Masters Scholarship will kick-start my transition towards my future goals that are in tandem with the realization of the economic and social pillar of Kenya Vision 2030 blueprint. I can now see light at the end of the tunnel as I endeavour to achieve my career objectives. The scholarship uplifted my financial obligations and quality of life at large.

Rashid Mgute Mwaguni from Mombasa is pursuing his Master of Arts in Geography at the University of Nairobi.

As a young Geographer, he wanted to solve problems of aridity, desertification, and climate change facing his community through research, which motivated him to advance his studies. In his words: “I see myself fulfilling my dream of becoming a productive Geographer to solve real problems in my society. It clearly affirms that acts of terrorism should be condemned …pursuing my career with the DAAD-Stiftung Scholarship  asserts that dreams cannot be shattered by barbaric acts of terrorism.”

Johnson Munyao from Kitui is pursuing his Master’s in Economics of Education at Moi University.

Johnson would like to pursue a Ph.D. and become a professor. In his words: “Through this scholarship, I have been exposed to a lot of academic knowledge which has improved my perception and attitude in life. I have been able to interact with Intellectuals within the field of my study who have inspired and challenged me. I have also been able to access physiotherapy services to improve my left leg condition and now I can walk uprightly. Thank you DAAD-Stiftung for awarding me this scholarship.

The DAAD-Stiftung, the DAAD Nairobi and the supporting Africa unit of the DAAD e.V. would like to wish all the recipients of the Garissa Masters Scholarship Program all the very best in their studies.

We are really proud of you!
