Falling Walls Lab Nairobi Winner

Rogers Githinji Ssekubwa has won the Falling Walls Lab Nairobi 2021 with his “Netflix of Law”, a website providing simplified Kenyan legal content online.

In his comprehensive and convincing 2,5-minutes presentation in front of a jury of experts, he explained the gap his platform “Nairobi Legal Insights” is bridging by offering legal assistance and information for lay persons seeking to understand the Kenyan law. According to Ssekubwa, this is in contrast to most similar online sources targeting law professionals. By helping every Kenyan to understand the law, he intends to “Breaking the Wall of Access to Justice.” Within the two months of it being active, the platform has already attracted 70,000 viewers, he reports.

As the winner of the Falling Walls Lab Nairobi, Rogers will travel to Berlin for the global Falling Walls Lab Finale in November where he will compete with other Lab winners from across the world for an overall win. Besides this event, he will participate in a science excursion organized by “Research in Germany” and attend an event by Springer Nature on Science Communication and Publishing, among other events in a tightly packed 5-days stay in Germany.

The Falling Walls Lab Nairobi 2021 took place on September 9 at Strathmore University for the first time in a hybrid form and attracted 3423 viewers on the social media channels of both the DAAD Kenya Facebook page and the Strathmore University social media pages.

The Falling Walls Lab is organised by the Falling Walls Foundation and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Berlin-Senate, Google, and Huawei.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been an academic partner of the Falling Walls Foundation since 2012 and has been conducting international Falling Walls Labs in its worldwide network of more than 70 offices abroad in about 40 countries as preliminary rounds for the final in Berlin since 2016. The worldwide labs of the German Academic Exchange Service are financially supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
