DAAD invites former DAAD scholarship holders from East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, DR Congo, Somalia) who are planning small Alumni events scheduled between April and October 2025 to submit their applications for funding.

What can be funded:

  • Events that promote the scientific/thematic exchange of Alumni
  • Workshops that contribute to the professional training of Alumni

The DAAD is particularly interested in supporting events that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Networking and activities surrounding the event are welcome.

Additionally, in 2025, the DAAD celebrates its 100s birthday. If you wish to reflect on this jubilee, perhaps create events that envision an (African) future that take into account sustainability, climate adaption/ mitigation and any other consideration that highlights the role of academia and research, in the past and the future – feel welcome to do so.

*Grant size: up to 12,000 EUR (in case of cross-country events within East Africa, up to 20,000 EUR)

*Eligibility: Only former scholarship holders of DAAD (having received individual DAAD funding for at least 3 months) and Alumni associations can apply. AT LEAST HALF of your event’s participants must be DAAD Alumni (current scholarship holders can attend, but do not count as Alumni and cannot be reimbursed for lodging and travel).

*Application deadline: Friday, 31st January, 2025.

Documents are to be submitted to the DAAD office in Nairobi via alumni.nairobi@daad.de. Please use only current templates, available for download here: Grants for alumni events https://www.daad.de/en/alumni/grants-for-alumni-events/

  • Application form
  • Project description
  • Event program
  • List of prospective participants
  • Financial plan

Please note that the participants’ list does not need to be final. Kindly avoid the recycling of participants’ list from previous events. Event applications with clearly defined tangible outcomes are encouraged. Proposed speakers/Alumni should be from relevant fields.

Please note that funds are limited and subject to approval. Not all applications might be considered. Please take time to read the “Leaflet on application for grants” carefully.

A web seminar on Alumni funding in general and funding for small Alumni events in particular will take place on Thursday, 16 January 2025, at 11 am EAT. We strongly encourage that anyone interested in applying to attend.
