The Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) is happy to inform you that the Call for Applications for the academic year 2025/26 is out now.

HIAS offers individual fellowships to outstanding scholars and artists who are granted full freedom to pursue their own research projects (3-10 months) on-site in Hamburg. Fellows enjoy excellent conditions in an inspiring scientific and artistic context, to concentrate on their projects, entirely unimpeded by their usual professional duties.

Eligible to apply are researchers of all disciplines and all career stages from the postdoctoral level onwards, as well as outstanding artists and cultural professionals – from all parts of the world.

HIAS seeks to compose a group of fellows that, in respect to its members’ academic or artistic disciplines, countries of origin and career stages, is as diverse and stimulating as possible.

Applicants should be internationally visible in their respective fields, give evidence of creativity and originality, as well as willingness to participate in a community of scholars, scientists, artists and cultural professionals and, in the form of lectures and other types of events, to engage with the broader public in the city of Hamburg.

A doctorate/ PhD is required for fellows working in academia.

Very good knowledge of English is necessary.

Currently, HIAS accepts fellowship applications of three to ten months duration for the academic year 2025/2026.

Applications may be submitted until 15 April 2024 via

The “African-German Scientific Exchange” enters its third round – this time in the field of neurosciences and invites researchers from all African countries and Germany to initiate international scientific collaboration. The focus on the neurosciences includes basic, applied and clinical topics.

Responding to the challenges of international networking posed by the pandemic, this initiative has so far brought together some 190 researchers in 46 teams from 24 Sub-Saharan African countries and Germany in the fields of Public Health (2021) and Agriculture (2022) and will now be continued beyond the pandemic context.

The “African-German Scientific Exchanges” are designed as integrated two-staged initiatives:

  1. Researchers are invited to submit scientific posters, network on the basis of a posterbook and identify joint interests
  2. Research teams are then called to submit proposals for the “Initiation of International Collaboration” at the DFG, a one-year funding programme which entails funds for guest visits, trips abroad and exploratory workshops.

The initiative will be enriched by an integrated “Forum: Connect and Exchange” for the funded research teams to expand African-German networks and give opportunity for mutual learning.
